St. Mary's Book Club got involved in planting gardens and trees while reading The Secret Garden.
Realizing that trees are a solution to global warming, the students wanted t know why we didn't According to NASA if every person grew one tree (7 billion) the world would add 16 years to current climate change levels! The student's discussed how parts of South Texas are ideal for growing trees. The students decided that they wanted each to plant one tree this year(7 trees). Next year 2019-2020 they want to get all the students at St. Mary's involved. The goal is each student planting 2 trees (900 trees). One tree to take home to plant with a family member and one to start the Reforest Texas Project. The Reforest Trees will be grown for 3 years prior to transplanting in previously forested parts of Texas. It is estimated that 900 trees reduces the carbon footprint of one American.
Climate change is a complex topic that planting trees and stopping deforestation can go a long way to address.
It costs $5.00 to sprout two acorns and grow them for 3 years prior to planting in the reforest project .
